Monotype_Big Issue

Based on the research into the visual representation of words and how the meanings are interpreted through shapes we developed a grid comprised of the key words picked out of the interview that represent The Big Issue on a more personal level. This means the words picked out from the interview determine the grid and what shapes it made up of.

Square
Structure
Foundation

Network

Circle

Security

Because these selected words are symbolised through the shapes square and circles it means the grid will be made up of only squares and circles, the grid will have to be simple in structure because we have to try and create and entire typeface upper and lowercase without manipulating the grid or it'll be inconsistent and may not work together in context.

Grids
Below are a series of grids created using only squares and circles

It is difficult to select a grid solely based on how they look digitally, the only way to find out if they work or not is to print them off and have a practice drawing letters on each one and see which one works the best. The best one must be able to work with all letters without being altered so that all the letters remain consistent. Bellow you'll find a document containing all the tests on the grids.

We printed off two of our favourite grids that we thought would be most successful and tried out a letter each, above are my findings. I found the simpler the grid, the easier it is to draw letters and for them to remain consistent. However, if the grid is made too simple the typeface will have no character and end up very bland.
