STUDY TASK 4 - A STUDY OF COLOUR

Analysing Ittens contrasts

There is a moderate-high contrast of tone because red is situated between the high and low tonal values of blue and yellow. Again the hue contrast is moderate because it's positioned in between yellow and blue. There is quite a high contrast of saturation because the background blue looks really dull saturated shade of blue, almost grey compared to the pure red. There is a moderate contrast of extension because of the 2 colours position on the colour wheel, the pure red is taking all the attention and the colours are not balanced proportionally. High contrast of temperature because the blue is cold even though it has hints of violet and the red is slightly orange against the saturated background. There is quite a high complimentary contrast because the bag has hints of orange but because the blue is closer violet as opposed to green it lowers it's value slightly.

There is a contrast of tones but its quite a low value because of their close tonal values and the same applies with hue contrast values. Compared to the blue there is a lower contrast of saturation because the orange seems less saturated. But the proportion has a lower value because the lower tonal values means they're not fighting for attention as much. There is a moderately low contrast in temperature because the red has a slight orange tone to it and visa versa therefore. Theres a low complimentary contrast value because the have simial values on the colour wheel, this means the red bag is not fighting for as much attention as it was on the blue background.

When the red bag is positioned on the yellow background it has a medium value of tone and hue because it's situated between yellow and blue, this means the bag has medium tonal values and the yellow has the highest tonal values. The yellow has some saturation to it but no where near the saturation of the blue therefore there is some contrast but not a high value. Because there is quite a low level of saturation in the yellow it means it's quite vivid which affects the contrast of extension meaning they're both fighting for attention and because the red is large in proportion it means there's a high level of contrast of extension. The yellow leans more to the green side on tones that orange which means it is driven further away in the colour temperature wheel meaning that the yellow is getting colder whilst the red is getting warmer, therefore, there is a high value of temperature contrast. Because the yellow is more green but also vivid it increases the value of complimentary colours.

The red on red has a similar tonal value, quite a low contrast of hue because similar value as the background. It has moderate contrast of saturation because the background is quite a dull saturated red whereas the bag is more pure. There is a slight contrast of temperature because the background has a hint of violet (colder) and the bag is closer to the warm orange tones. There is a low contrast of extension because they're similar tones it doesn't matter that the bag is quite large and takes up most of the background, finally it has a low complimentary contrast because both reds aren't really fighting for attention.

There are high levels of tonal contrast and hue between the bag and the green. There is a high level of saturation because the green is very saturated whereas the red is pure, there is moderate contrast of extension, if the green was more vivid it would be a higher value but also the light in the picture makes the bag look less vivid. There is also a high level of complimentary contrast because they're complimentary colours. The hints of yellow in the green make it quite warm for a green but still cold in comparison to the warm red meaning there's quite a high level of contrast in temperature.

Against the neutral background there is a reasonably high contrast in tone and hue because the neutral has a low value of tone. The neutral background is near enough fully saturated resulting in a very high contrast of saturation, the red draws all the attention meaning it has a high value of extension contrast. The neutral has tones of blue whereas the red has orange meaning the contrast of temperature is a high value and because of the blue tones it means it has a medium value of complimentary contrast.

The is a moderately low value of tone and hue contrast because each colour both has hints of yellow. There is little contrast between saturation because both are slightly saturated. because the item is quite small against the sheet of paper there isn't much contrast of extension. There are moderate to high levels of temperature contrast because orange is warm and green is close to blue but the green does have tones of yellow in it making it warmer. There is also a high level of complimentary contrast because orange is close to green and red and green are complimentary colours.

There is quite a high level in tonal contrast because the dark tones in the blue, and the light yellow tones int the green object. High level of contrast in saturation even though the green isn't pure but the blue is extremely saturated to the point where it is nearly a grey, however this is due to the lighting of picture the blue is actually more blue than the image. There is a medium contrast in temperature because the green has yellow tones making it warmer whereas the blue is cold. There is a slight complimentary contrast because the green is more vivid and more towards yellow than blue. Finally there is a medium level of contrast of extension because the green is so vivid compared to the blue but i believe they're quite well proportioned.

The green on the yellow background has a low tone and hue value because they bother have similar tone values and with the yellow tones in the green it positions the green very close to the yellow. There is a slight contrast of saturation because the yellow is slightly more saturated than the green. Again because they're quite simlar tones, saturation, proportion and because they're not vivd colours they're not fighting with each other as much meaning it has a low value of contrast. There's not a huge complimentary contrast or in temperature because of the closeness between the two colours, they both have hints of green and yellow.

There's a high level of contrast in tone and hue between the green and red, also there is a medium level of saturation contrast between the two however the light has affected the saturation of the red in the background and they were quite similar in person. The green is fighting for a attention which causes a slight contrast of extension, there is rather high level in contrast of temperature because of the violet tones in the red and the yellow tones in the green. Also the green is a complimentary colour to the red meaning the levels of contrast are high.

The 2 above have low contrasts between tone and hue because they're similar colours, there's a level of contrast in saturation because the background is a lot more saturated making the the object look a purer green. Slight contrast of temperature but not much and there's a bit contrast extension because of the more vivid green against the saturated yellowy green.

There is a moderate contrast in tonal value and a high value in hue contrast. It has a very high contrast in saturation because of the highly saturated grey with blue/violet tones. There's a medium contrast in temperature because the green has blue tones and so does the neutral background.
