END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION

NAME
Harrison Park

1.  What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

My crafting skills have come on leaps and bounds since the first module of the year. At the beginning of the year I had a lot less consideration towards the finishing touches and the impact they have. It has been applied massively throughout my final printed designs and is obvious a lot more care went into trimming and binding because it wasn’t left until the last minute and I always made sure a fresh blade was used to keep edges clean.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

I have thoroughly developed my layout skills through this module because of the different studio tasks that were set over the course of a day. This in turn helped with many design tasks such as design boards (where layout and presentation is key to impact) and layout of the research publication.

We also had a design board workshop which brought to light issues with my design boards and helped me build and develop what I already had. They are the first port of call when it comes to a project and presenting the outcome therefore they should be up to scratch and it is giving a full representation of the project.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

My printing abilities is definitely a strength throughout my work in this module, with working in the digital print room at university it has allowed me to have unlimited access to the resources. This ultimately leads to a much better quality, higher standard of work simply through the print and stock quality.

My publication layout skills are also a strength identifiable in my work, it enables me to arrange/organise content in a much more visual way that stimulates the viewer and maintain interest.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

My time management has been a big issue throughout this module, over the last few weeks with multiple submissions I’ve found this brief get put on the back burner in order to complete other projects. This module has suffered and I have found myself at a stage where I still want to push the brief further and develop much more but can’t because it requires submission. Through keeping on top of work, blogging regularly and being more decisive I aim to address these issues in the future.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

1.     Push briefs further; develop them to a point where I’m content as opposed to ending them because it requires submission.
2.     Blog as I go; I’m forever finding myself in the situation where blogging is left until last and this suffers hugely as I’m rushing to get it done and not showing full development.
3.     Photograph all my outcomes in the correct environment instead of outside the studio, image quality is key and although they’re being retaken for my website and Behance, it’s still important to have them for design boards.
4.     Allow more time towards the end for design boards; by doing this they’ll will give a more thorough representation of the response towards the brief.
5.     Spend less time procrastinating and more time working; this is pretty straightforward. I’m always looking for something to do other than design if it’s near the beginning of a brief. I seem to only work under pressure but this affects everything as it’s all rushed.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
(please indicate using an ‘x’)

5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor

The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.

Images
Below is a series of final images of my printed materials, the quality is rubbish because of my lack of time management and doesn't do my work justice whatsoever. But what it does illustrate is the consistency throughout the entire branding. I feel like this is my best project to date in terms of professional standards and consistency throughout, however I feel it just needs to be pushed further. I really got into it towards the end and felt like I could/wanted to produce a lot more but just run out of time.

I'm pretty disappointed with my time management over the course of this project, it had the potential to be amazing but just fell at the first hurdle. I feel like the project deserves to be continued over the summer just to see where it could go and to see what I can produce when I focus and put time into an idea, fully developing it.

Tape/Packaging
Replica prints are available to buy from the exhibition therefore it is key to get them home safely causing no damage to the print. I created branded Sellotape that not only serves a functional purpose by holding the package together, it also serves as a promotional aid.

I physically made the take by printing onto clear vinyl, cutting it into strips and rolling it around a pre existing roll of tape. When un peeling the tape to use I found it  also peeled ink off the printed tape underneath so it looked like it had been double printed. I love the idea of having branding tape, it takes it that little further than simply just having branded poster tubes.

Zine Spreads
The zine is pretty straight forward in terms of layout and structure, it is simply a photo zine/catalogue of what is at the exhibition. I wanted to offer a more in depth view into the images therefore I spread so larger more 'important' images across spreads, by offering a larger image it means more detail can be viewed. Each image has its own little info section that offers a title, date and dimensions.

Poster Layout Development
The posters follow a simple layout heavily based on my research, the image is the main focus because it is a photography exhibition. The it's all down to typography hierarchy, the title and logo are largest, then the date, tag line, what it's about and then all the little details like location, price and times. I've decided to separate the logo and having it floating around over the images is to replicate the effects of gravity and to tie in the whole space theme further.

Below is a series of development images in which I experiment with laying over the way finding icons to give it a more graphical feel but I found they interfered with the image too much and didn't make to much sense in terms of functionality. They simply looked like they had been placed there to 'look good'.

I also experimented with image size, the images are all square so I found them very difficult to work with in terms of positioning, therefore I laid them out similar to a polaroid. The images where then scaled up all the way to the edges or down to give more focus on the text and information. I found the best way to display the image was to have them aligned with the margin, this way the text wasn't in line so it was apparent they weren't relatable in the sense it was a description of the image but still had some relativity.

I placed the images on a off white background just to make them stand out ever so slightly, some of the text looked a little lost in the vast white spaces, especially the bread crumbs at the bottom.
